Ironwood-Gantzel Multi-Phased Roadway Improvement Project
Features & Highlights
- Reconstruction of 15 miles of existing roadway
- Established a communication system to keep stakeholders informed
Project Overview
This 30-month project involved reconstructing 15 miles of an existing two-lane roadway to four and six lanes, more than doubling its traffic capacity in one of the fastest growing areas in the country. ÃÛ¶¹ÊÓƵalso coordinated the installation of water, sewer, and other underground utilities not included in the original roadway design but were needed to support the area’s rapid growth.
One of the greatest challenges for the team to overcome was to ensure the safe and productive use of Ironwood for the thousands of motorists that use the road on a daily basis. The traffic volumes of Ironwood demanded that the project team take extra steps to establish a system of communication that afforded all users had access to information on the frequent changes occurring as the construction of Ironwood Road progressed. The team hosted a Traffic Systems Management meeting that included the stakeholders impacted by those changes, and the meeting established a network of communication. Dialogue was established with the public information officers of adjacent jurisdictions to ensure the most current information was distributed to the appropriate agencies, and these updates were also sent to subscribers of the project’s website. The Ironwood Team sent out information to over 14,000 email inboxes, and 20,000 newsletters were mailed to area households twice per year in an effort to effectively communicate with the public.
