City of San Antonio Broadway Street Reconstruction
Features & Highlights
- Widened pedestrian walkways and ADA facilities
- Enhanced pedestrian lighting and roadway illumination
- Green infrastructure and bioactive soil drainage systems to manage stormwater runoff
- Underground utilities upgrades
This project for the City of San Antonio aims to revitalize the Broadway Street Corridor at E. Houston to IH-35. This street is a critical artery connecting the historic downtown core to the northern inner-city neighborhoods. The scope is a complete reconstruction of the 1-mile span and involves removing a traffic lane, adding more sidewalks and creating accommodations for pedestrians and public transit.
Improvements include widened sidewalks, driveway approaches, traffic signals and drainage improvements, as well as new utilities, extensive landscaping, pedestrian lighting, and a green infrastructure, low-impact development approach to managing stormwater runoff. The project incorporated bioswales, which treat stormwater runoff with soil filtration layers. The bioswales are connected to the stormwater system that feeds the treated runoff directly into the San Antonio River.
